Combining a Spa Holiday with other Holiday Ideas
Many Spa towns can be found in the mountains (but there are exceptions, like Bath) this means that it very feasible to combine Spa treatments with an adventure, mountain or lake holiday, which provide a massive range of activities, from golf to rafting, of interest to all the family.
This is even more true in Winter, where some members of the family maybe fanatical (or want to try) skiing where others have no desire to strap planks on their legs and launch themselves downhill (too much like hard work?). In this case the solution may be to visit a spa town or find a ski resort with a spa hotel. Something to keep everyone happy.
Many beach resorts now also boast top class spa hotels with a range of optional treatments allowing you to combine the conventional beach holiday with some additional and very special pampering.
A spa town, or simply spa, is a town frequented mainly for health reasons, to "take the waters". The word comes from the Belgian town of Spa. In Europe a spa was known as a ville d'eau (town of water). The term spa is used for towns or resorts offering hydrotherapy which can include cold water or mineral water treatments and hot thermal baths (heated by natural underground volcanic activity).
The Romans were very big on hot springs (Thermae) which they used to power their bath houses, and so many spa towns like Bath were founded in Roman towns, and the therapies they have offered have continued with varying prosperity until today.
Slightly more slippery to define as any hotel offering a facial could describe itself as having a Spa. Generally speaking though if you should expect a minimum of four treatments for a hotel to take itself seriously as a Spa hotel. One should expect that the hotel will be using its Spa, and associated treatments, alongside a peaceful atmosphere and pleasant grounds as unique selling point for why you should stay there. Tour operators like Thomson who run spa hotels look for elegant surrounding and exceptional hotels in exceptional locations; they run these hotels as flagship or premium hotels. You would also expect the food and service to be be of a complimentary high standard.
Relax and contemplate life from a stunning infinity pool, treat yourself to real me-time in a stress free environment. Get pampered and soothed by artful experts in a low-lit personal treatment room. Many resorts have natural thermal baths for you to enjoy.
A thermal hydromassage is simply a relaxing soak in millions of bubbles, with the added benefit of water jets to target specific areas. You could also enjoy a similar experience with the likes of seaweed creams or aromatic oils thrown in. For a truly heavenly experience, try the Oriental Bath – a wonderful soak with a nourishing combination of natural milk, sandalwood and myrhh. Or perhaps an Indonesian Bath with aromatic oils, combined with a deliciously relaxing head massage.
Peeling treatments are simply an exfoliation of the skin to remove dead skin cells, encourage circulation and leave you glowing. Different types of peeling treatments use different oils, salts or plant extracts which are applied all over the body. Circular movements are then applied to areas of the body to renew and soften the surface of the skin. You’ll feel refreshed, relaxed and radiant.
How about a spot of body massage? There are stacks of different types of massage, each one designed to achieve a specific goal. Try the heavenly therapeutic body massage to target and relieve aches and pains in the joints, neck and back. Why not enjoy a touch of reflexology, a therapy focused entirely on the feet? Sounds odd, but this ancient oriental foot rub helps you to relax, balance, and regain vital body energy. Keen golfer? Then try the special golf massage, a treatment dedicated to the areas of the body that work the hardest for your swing – enjoy increased flexibility across your body ready for your next round.
Spa Treatments
A body treatment, spa treatment, or cosmetic treatment is non-medical procedure to help the health of the body.
It's the generic term for water therapies using jets, underwater massage and mineral baths (e.g. Balneotherapy, Iodine-Grine Therapy, Kneipp Treatments, Scotch Hose, Swiss Shower, Thalassotherapy) and others. It also can mean a whirlpool bath, hot Roman pool, hot tub, Jacuzzi, cold plunge, Turkish and mineral bath. These treatments use physical water properties, such as temperature and pressure, for therapeutic purposes, to stimulate blood circulation and treat the symptoms of certain diseases.
Hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases.
Its use has been recorded in ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian civilizations. Egyptian royalty bathed with essential oils and flowers, while Romans had communal public baths for their citizens.
Other Spa treatments
Facial, massage, waxing, mud baths, body wraps, aromatherapy, exfoliation, yoga/meditation, nail care.
Spa Towns - Where do I find them?
Some but not all British spa towns contain "Spa", "Wells", or "Bath" in their names, e.g., Matlock Bath. Some towns are designated Spa Heritage Towns. Both English towns granted the title "Royal", royal Leamington Spa and Royal Tunbridge Wells, are spa towns. There are however Spa towns throughout Europe.
In France Spa towns are typically suffixed with “Les Bains” Including Aix-Les-Bains (in the Alps).
In Austria and Germany Spa town are typically prefixed with the word ‘Bad’ from Bath.
In Croatia the word Toplice implies a Spa town.
In Serbia the word Banske in a town name denominates it as a spa.
