Why wouldn’t I choose a Holiday in the Mountains?
If you are a true sun worshipper then the temperatures in the mountains in mid Summer will be warm even hot, but are unlikely to exceed the high twenties in valley and up to twenty on the peaks, plenty warm enough for most people. If your main desire on holiday is to lie down and soak up the sun with sand between your toes, and catch up on your reading then its not for you. You may also miss the sound and smell of the sea, although some of the mountain lakes (lake Garda, etc) as so big they are almost like the Sea and get quite rough in bad weather . Mountain holidays are probably no more expensive in terms on accommodation, and flights, but you will spend more on food and activities. One answer to this is to fix some or all of these up-front through your tour operator.
Why Choose a Holiday in the mountains?
The peace and quiet, the tranquility of the high mountains is still something to be treasured and savoured. The clear sky, fantastic views, stunning scenery. When you stop whatever you are doing and drink it in, listen to the birdsong, the insect buzzing (not many mosquitoes high up - unless you are in the jungle) in the heat. Choose a different activity everyday, or go back to your favourite stretch of water to catch salmon or trout, play a round of golf, get a massage and sauna in the spa, the choice of activities is hard to beat.
Also, rather than just seeing the ski slopes which tends to be the case on a ski holiday, in summer you find you are surrounded by an endless list of places to visit. Again taking the French Alps as an example, a week's holiday in a mountain resort in the Haute Savoie could easily include day trips to Annecy (voted one of Europe's most beautiful cities), Italy, Geneva, Evian and any number of national parks and chateaux.
What could I do on a Summer Mountain holiday?
The great thing about a Summer mountain holiday is that you a choice to do as little or as much as you like. If you have a family with active teenagers this may appeal to them more than a traditional beach holiday as they can go off and indulge in teen risk taking activities in a supervised environment, meanwhile Mum could have a spa treatment and Dad could have a round of golf or go fishing. However maybe you could all go mountain biking, riding or walking together.

Where should I go for a Summer Mountain holiday?
There was no point listing all the mountain ranges in the world, rather I have concentrated on those with known tourist industries and a good selection of accommodation and organised activities. The choice is pretty huge.
We were going to try and compile a matrix of activities and resorts but the sheer number of resorts and option and the difficulty of reliable data gathering has over whelmed us. Instead I am going to pick an summer mountain holiday activity and then say which I think are probably the top resorts, but as this is a matter of opinion I have posted it on the blog so people can comment and make their own suggestions.
