An ideal adventure or activity holiday idea is a real opportunity to bond as a family in a way that other holiday ideas do not provide for, they can also provide many more memorable moments. Often it is easy to dismiss them, especially if your children are younger, however the range of activities available is so huge that there is just about something for everyone. There are almost literally 1001 different holiday ideas you can do with choices of location too. There are resorts that were built for families to take adventure vacations, for example a place like Keystone in Colorado (there are lots of equivalent in the Alps or Pyrenees or Dolomites). They have a children’s centre, but an adult can go rafting in the morning, or go play tennis, or go hiking, or whatever.
The world is changing, these days children are not allowed to roam as far as we would when I was growing up; that is a statistical fact. So an adventure holiday where they can ‘get closer to nature’ is going to be educational for them and test them a little more than we would allow them normally.
Don’t dismiss these holiday ideas because different people in your group or family like or can do different things. Many holidays cater for this explicitly or implicitly. Safari and Adventure tour operators organise specific tours/safaris for families from the ages of 5 up with appropriate activities.
Many holidays combine activities like walking and rafting, where the latter can be opted out, where these are based in one location then one or more of the party can do their own thing when they want a change. Also some perfect activity holidays are not necessarily physical such as driving safaris. If you feel you are not up for a full activity holiday, you can add a day or twos activities (like biking or diving) to a conventional beach/resort holiday. Operators like Isango offer specific holiday add-ons.

Cruises make for ideal family holidays ideas, also romantic vacations for couples. One of the positives I like most about cruises is that you can really give your kids a lot of freedom. Where are they going to go? (In my youngest son’s case, age 5, on the bridge telling the Captain how to run the ship). One of the other main advantages of a cruise is that it has something for everybody, it has activities for kids usually starting at about age two, up to seniors. There is always ideas for people to do, organised by someone else, no matter what age they are, and that is wonderful for those who want to take holidays with extended family. Conversely there is no need to do anything except sit on a lounger, reading and drinking cocktails. Finally there are always babysitting/listening services available for the evenings. Theme parks include a bigger range than just Disney, and others such as Universal are designed for a slightly older age range. However the principle considerations are similar. The core Disney offering is aimed at children up to 9, but obviously many of the rides and attractions will still appeal to children older than this. If you have a range of ages the main consideration is height as this determines when it is safe on some rides. Once they are over 125cm. in height then the majority of the rides are available.
One of the things that put me off Disney and other parks was the thought of spending half my holiday queuing. I hate queues! But now with the Fast pass you can avoid the worst of this. It enables you to ‘book’ a predetermined time for a ride/attraction. You turn up with your Fastpass and go straight on at that time.
Still by far the most popular type of holiday idea. Everyone knows what they are going to get. Providing you do some research on the resort and the accommodation there is no reason not to have a brilliant holiday. Just follow some simple guidelines, checkout our Useful stuff section. Once you have a shortlist it is worth checking sites like TripAdvisor to make sure there are going to be no nasty surprises. See our special Winter Sun page for winter beach holidays
These resorts / hotels include all meals and (alcoholic) drinks in the price. There may be some restrictions on branded spirits or imported beer, and some times there are supplements (additional charges) for some of the restaurants, or limitations such as dress code or booking in advance. Additionally they may also provide various activities for adults and children, such as wind surfing, sailing or tennis.
All inclusive resorts obviously involve a higher up-front outlay, but can nonetheless provide extremely good value. You will not have the aggravation, or fun, of finding nice local restaurants, but the food should be of a consistent standard and you are less likely to get a stomach upset. However it is likely to be ‘international’ rather than local with possibly an American or German feel (depending on the predominant trade).
Holiday camps have lots of organised activities for the kids, and in some also for the more active adults and older teenagers. They also provide the opportunity to get babysitting through the reps usually at a modest cost. By and large they are very cosmopolitan and your children will probably find some international playmates. They are also generally child friendly environments with lifeguards at the pools to help keep an eye on them (always a slight concern at villas with their own pools if your children are younger).
There are holiday camps to suit all budgets, as you can find all types of accommodation and catering arrangements. Do bear in mind that if you go for a tent or static caravan that you are going back to nature as these are usually in woodlands, so you may have ants or other insects.
I personally would not recommend holiday camps for your ideal holiday if you don’t have children as they can be omnipresent; if you want the organised activities there are lots of all inclusive resorts that offer (usually water based) activities included in the package.
